Francisco de Goya y Lucientes 1746-1828) was the son of a poor goldsmith in Saragossa. In 1763: he moved to Madrid and, after a period of travel, he returned in 1776 to become a successful artist. He became Principal Painter to King Charles IV in 1799. In 1811, Joseph Bonaparte granted him the Royal Order of Spain.
